beef sliders with jalapinos and honey butter recipe

Have I mentioned my obsession with honey butter?

I mean, do I need to? I know few people who can resist the stuff at Texas Roadhouse. It kind of goes without saying.

I have a sweet tooth for sure, but I also like mixing sweet flavors with unexpected ones – salt, for one, but also spice. It may sound weird, but two things that I think make a fabulous combination are honey + jalapeños.

You see jalapeño jam around every once in a while, and maybe even jalapeño-flavored honey, but I decided I liked the idea of melted honey butter dripping over a jalapeño-topped burger.

As far as jalapeños go, I prefer the fresh ones, of course, but I always keep one of those big Sam’s Club jars of pickled jalapeños in the fridge because they’re so incredibly convenient. And they last forever. If I’m eating them raw, I try to let the juice drip off and dry, but I can barely tell the difference when I’m tossing them  into salsa or cooking them into something.

For this recipe, I did not have fresh jalapeños on hand, so I heated a few slices in a skillet with some butter until they were caramelized. (In retrospect, I definitely should have used honey butter – hello!) They made the perfect burger toppings.

Another mistake I made with these burgers was not toasting the buns the first time I made them. They were still good, don’t get me wrong, but I smeared more honey butter all over the leftover buns the next day and toasted them until they were just browned. (And then dolloped even more on top. 😊) A definite improvement – definitely take the extra step if you make this recipe!

I used small dollar buns to make these little sliders, and I was able to make 10 small burgers out of a pound of ground beef. And, of course, there was plenty of honey butter smeared all over them even without me remembering to cook the jalapeños in it and toast the buns with it.

Add a little salt and pepper (or your favorite grill seasoning) to these burgers, and you’re all set! For a relatively small ingredient list, they’re full of flavor and definitely not your average burger.

The honey butter itself is very simple to make, too. Butter, powdered sugar, honey, and a dash of cinnamon are all you need. If putting cinnamon on a burger grosses you out, you can leave that out, but the flavor isn’t very discernible to begin with.

My main advice for making honey butter, just like buttercream, is to take the time to whip it up. You don’t just want the ingredients to be well-mixed; you want them to be light and fluffy. The color should actually change and lighten as you keep running your hand mixer – at least a couple minutes for really fluffy honey butter. You don’t want it to look wet! Until it’s dripping down the side of your burger, of course.

That’s it! Honey butter burgers with caramelized jalapeños.

I am not always the hugest burger person unless they’re old-fashioned cheeseburgers, but I love these because they’re different.

So naturally, I’m curious: what’s the best/craziest/most unique burger you’ve ever had? The more bizarre, the better!PRINTBEEF SLIDERS WITH JALAPEÑOS AND HONEY BUTTER

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Yield: 10 sliders

Serving Size: 1 slider (with extra honey butter)

  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 10 dollar buns or Hawaiian slider buns
  • 3 jalapenos, sliced
  • ¼ cup butter (1/2 stick), softened
  • 1 Tbsp. honey
  • 1 Tbsp. powdered sugar
  • ½ tsp. cinnamon

  1. First, make the honey butter: place 1/4 cup butter, honey, powdered sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Using a hand mixer, whip all ingredients together on high speed for at least 3 minutes or until light and fluffy. You should see the color change as the mixture becomes whiter and less yellow as it fluffs up.
  2. Preheat grill. Form beef into 10 small patties. Add salt and pepper to taste. When grill is hot, place patties on grill. Cook for 5 minutes on each side or until patties are cooked through.
  3. Meanwhile, cook jalapenos. Preheat a small skillet over medium heat. Add a teaspoon of honey butter and saute jalapenos until they begin to brown. Set aside.
  4. If desired, butter buns (either using prepared honey butter or just regular butter) and place on grill with burgers for a minute or two until just toasted.
  5. When burgers are cooked through, smear a generous tablespoon of honey butter inside each bun. Place burgers on buns and top with caramelized jalapenos. Serve immediately.

You probably won’t use the entire batch of honey butter, but it is included in the nutritional information below, so be aware that you are not consuming as many calories if you do not lick the honey butter bowl clean. 🙂
